Car finance: compare HP, PCP and a personal loan

Jurisdiction: United Kingdom Published Updated By FinanceSherpa Editorial Desk

The short answer

HP normally spreads the car price after a deposit and transfers ownership after the agreement is completed. PCP usually has lower monthly payments because a large optional final payment is deferred. A personal loan can let you buy the car outright. Compare deposit, total payable, ownership, mileage rules and exit terms.

A monthly-payment comparison is particularly misleading for cars because the options can leave you with different ownership rights and final obligations.

Hire Purchase (HP)

HP commonly uses a deposit followed by fixed payments. You do not normally own the car until the agreement is completed and any purchase fee is paid. Because the full remaining price is repaid through the schedule, monthly payments can be higher than PCP.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

PCP defers part of the car value into an optional final balloon payment. At the end you usually return the car, pay to own it, or enter another agreement. Mileage and condition terms can create return charges.

Personal loan

With an unrestricted personal loan, you normally pay the seller and own the car from purchase, while owing the separate loan. Compare whether this affects purchase protections, the rate available and your options if the car develops a problem.

Questions people ask

Is PCP cheaper than HP?

Its monthly payment is often lower because a large amount is deferred. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on the complete payments, fees, final choice and charges.

Can I end PCP or HP early?

There may be early-settlement and statutory voluntary-termination routes, but the conditions and sums paid matter. Ask the finance provider for agreement-specific figures before acting.
